Is your child into reading, music, sports, or maths? Have you stopped to observe what their real interests are? If you haven’t, consider committing more time to do this, to help them develop to their full potential.
A child who hardly makes the ‘A’ grades in school will question his own intelligence. However, because we have multiple intelligences, children may be smart in many different ways:
Linguistic: Thinks with words, talks or writes to himself, large vocabulary, speak confidently and listen accurately. Well informed, he wants to share his ideas with others.
Logical – mathematical: This child thinks deeply and asks questions to make sense of the world around them. He has a high need to know.
Spatial: this child thinks with his eyes. He is very observant and learns a lot through pictures, diagrams, maps, illustrations. He is able to visualise what he wants.
Musical: Thinks in sounds and melodies
Bodily-Kinesthetic: This child thinks by moving and touching. He is almost always in motion – arms, legs, fingers…. He struggles to keep still. And usually has very good eye-hand coordination.
Naturalist: This child thinks with patterns and notices shapes and sizes, patterns and textures. They enjoy working with nature – plants and / or animals, the weather, or natural
Interpersonal: This child is interested in people and is able to accurately read your body language, telling when you are happy, anxious or excited.
Intrapersonal: This child thinks deeply inside of himself. He is very reflective and knows his strengths and weaknesses, what he does and doesn’t like. He tends to be an effective goal setter. He is usually quiet and prefers to work independently.
Your child may have more than one of these intelligences at the same time. Observe his interest and ability, and to encourage him. Some intelligences may be weak, but have the potential to develop as the child matures. Constant monitoring is therefore important. Keep nurturing their strengths and steer away from criticism, teasing or constantly demanding perfection.
